My name is Angelina and I am a 22-year-old student from Germany where I am studying human medicine in my 4th year. In August 2016 I had the opportunity to do a four-week medical internship at Tongji Hospital in Wuhan. It was organized by the German Chinese Society of Medicine which has a great and long-lasting cooperation with the hospital. I was very proud to be member of it and to get the possibility to learn more about Chinese medical standards and methods.
For the four weeks I have chosen radiology and anaesthesiology as my main subjects. I always had contact persons who spoke English and sometimes even German very well. Therefore I have learned a lot about medical issues and also about the Chinese culture. It was very interesting to get to know how the doctors work in China and how a German hospital differs from a Chinese clinic. Moreover some diseases that are common in Germany are not usual in China and vice versa. This is why I could see pictures in radiology or operations in anaesthesiology I have never seen before.
All in all I had a wonderful time in China, not only because of the internship at Tongji Hospital but also because of the City of Wuhan. In my view it is a quite non-touristic town compared to other places in China. Consequently, I had the feeling that I was really able to participate in Chinese lifestyle and culture, despite the short time in this large country.
I would always recommend this awesome experience to other medicine students and I would have stayed longer, if my semester break had not ended that early. Many thanks again to the German Chinese Society of Medicine, Tongji Hospital and the great people I met there.
